Intro To Positive Affirmations
Have you heard about how words can shape or have an effect on your reality? Maybe you’ve heard about the topic called positive affirmations, during a podcast on social media or from a friend. What is it? And how can it help you?
Let’s discuss.
At its heart, positive affirmations are statements that you want to be true, or something you want to speak into existence. It’s an easy practice of speaking words that will empower and encourage you to reach a goal or achieve something. I know it sounds a little wishy washy but there is something to be said about the subject, especially when you constantly find yourself in a place of doubt and negativity.
Your thoughts have a very profound effect on how you behave, your emotions and how you react to things. Think about a time when you told yourself you didn’t have what it took to accomplish something or when you told yourself you weren’t smart enough. Do you remember how those thoughts became ingrained in you that they became your reality? It’s almost like planting seeds that will cause doubt in your mind. Those negative thoughts can create a world of negativity and doubt. They can stop you from doing things you enjoy or things you can accomplish.
Enter positive affirmations.
By shutting down those negative thoughts and beliefs, and focusing on the positive you can reshape your reality. If you’ve never been good at cooking for example, and you start telling yourself that practice makes perfect or you’ll get better over time, these thoughts have a positive effect on your reality. Not sure if you’ve ever heard of neuroplasticity, which is the brain's ability to form neural connections and reorganize itself in response to new experiences. According to Psychology Today, “Affirmations can help us to develop a more optimistic way of looking at ourselves and our experiences. Optimism is known to be a powerful concept. Chronic physical symptoms are, in part, about a destructive narrative within us.”
When we repeat positive affirmations, we are basically encouraging our brains to adopt more positive patterns. Instead of going down a path of self-doubt or criticism, we nurture a mind of confidence and mindfulness.
So, what do positive affirmations sound like? It really depends on what YOU need to help you move forward in a meaningful way.
Here are some examples:
1. I know I can do this!
2. With some practice, I will overcome this challenge.
3. I am worthy of happiness and love.
See, these affirmations are simple but can be very effective with consistency, belief and intention. They can have a profound effect on how you see the world and things happening around you. Affirmations are a great reminder that we all are worthy and have the potential to reach our most ambitious dreams. Fear is what usually stops people from achieving their goals, and with positive affirmations you can cast those doubts aside and live a more fulfilling life.
